Bihar: Muslim Cloth Vendor Lynched by Mob in Nawada, Eight Arrested

Mohammad Athar Hussain (40), a Muslim cloth vendor from Nalanda district in Bihar, died after being brutally assaulted by a mob in Bhattapur village under Roh police station limits in Nawada district. The incident occurred on the evening of December 5, 2025, when Hussain was returning home and stopped to ask for help after his bicycle tyre got punctured.

According to the complaint filed by his wife, Shabnam Parveen, Hussain was allegedly attacked after being asked his name and religious identity. He was accused of theft, tortured for several hours, and subjected to extreme physical violence before being left unconscious on the roadside. He was taken to a local health centre and later referred to multiple hospitals, where he succumbed to his injuries on December 12, 2025.

Bihar Police registered a case on December 6, 2025, and invoked multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including those related to unlawful assembly, grievous hurt, abetment, and murder. As of December 13, 2025, eight accused have been arrested and remanded to judicial custody, while efforts continue to apprehend the remaining accused.

The case has drawn political reactions, with opposition leaders criticising the State government over alleged failures in maintaining law and order and highlighting concerns about mob violence targeting minorities.
